A True Story: a friend of mine opened a small resort camp in the upper peninsula of Michigan. I said I knew a processor that would give him a great deal on equipment and a fair price. "Nope", he said, "I'm getting 1.49% and 17cents on everything with a processor that came in to see me yesterday." I said that was impossible to get that rate on everything, that is was below interchange rates. "Nope", he said, "they swore to me I'd get that rate on everything."
Two months later he asked me to take a look at his statement and explain why he was paying so much. They were changing him 1.49% and 17 cents on all transactions, just like they said they would. Of course, in the "other fees" section they also were charging him another 1.49% and another 17 cents on all transactions. By the time all his other fees were added in, he had an
effective rate close to 3.8% and 34 cents a transaction. He didn't listen! If he had, he would have cut his costs significantly.
